What do need equipment do I need to use Jim’s Jigomatic while fishing? Our rod pumper can be used fishing with flies, lures, and with live bait at trolling speeds from 0.5 - 3.0 MPH. We like to use lead core line and stainless steel rod and reel setups along with fly rod with sinking lines and traditional lightweight spinning rods. This Jim’s Jigomatic excels while fishing in saltwater also. It is important to size the rod, the lure, and the trolling speed to optimize the drag on the equipment. For example, make sure your setup is balanced - that the rod is able to handle the drag incurred by the setup. Jim’s Rod Pumper is very strong and will pull the rod independent of the drag the setup sees.
How easy is Jim’s Jigomatic to operate? You will be amazed how simple it is to operate this unit. You first install your rod by lifting up on the rod holder and inserting the rod into the section that splays out. Then gently push it back into the holder base. Turn the switch to either a slow or fast pull. Each setup that you use may have a different look as it is pulled. Study this for a few pulls. In case you get a small fish, it will require you to pay some attention. Most of the time you will know a fish is on. Once a fish is on, turn the switch to off and pull the rod straight up. This will release and you will be into the fish on the rod.

Apply a small amount of white grease (marine grease with Teflon works well) to the slide bar and the gears. We recommend that this maintenance be done in between 200 hours (that’s 25 - 8 hour days of hard continuous trolling) for optimum performance and longevity.
What tips do you recommend to optimize Jim’s Jigomatic success on the water? When using lead core or wire, we like using a line counter reel that holds 100 yards of the trolling line. We attach a number 14 barrel swivel to the lead core or wire line. We then run 10 lb test line 60-100 ft . We attach another size 14 barrel swivel to this 10 lb test line and then connect 6 or 8 lb fluorocarbon line up to 10-40 ft. In the spring time we often fish 1, 2 or three colors.
